The Battistis: Cycling for public broadcasting

Michael and Stephanie Battisti of Jay, NY were in Breaks Interstate Park, VA on 6/6, well into a 4000-mile jouney across the country to Seattle, WA. They are enjoying the American countryside from their respective perches atop a tandem bicycle.

Starting out from Yorktown

The Battistis began their journey with the back wheel in the Atlantic.

You can follow their progress across the country via their blog Tandem Tales.

As an added incentive, the Battisti’s are cycling in support of public broadcasting. Stephanie is carrying the flag for Mountain Lake PBS, and Michael is riding in support of North Country Public Radio. So far, NCPR listeners have pledged $.32/per mile in support of Michael’s effort. You can add your contribution by visiting the Cycling for NCPR pledge page.

Stephanie, I left a rather lengthy message on http://www.tandembattistis.blogspot.com which was your blog from your tandem bike ride this summer. I agree with your observation that raising 4 kids is a comparable if not greater challenge.

My wife, Marcie, met you both when she provided shelter from a thunderstorm as you and Mike were headed north through Silverthorne, CO in late July. You mentioned you were from the Lake Placid area and I did IM Lake Placid in 2008 as a trial run for next year’s event … July 24th, 2011. I turn 65 next year and entering a new age group hope to qualify for IM Hawaii at Lake Placid. We’ve got a room at the Marriott in LP for Saturday and Sunday night (I learned a painful logistics lesson last year about getting around Lake Placid on race weekend) but would really appreciate any bed and breakfast opportunity for a few days earlier in the week.

Let me know if that’s a possibility.

Look forward to hearing from you.
