This week’s music and book picks

Can’t remember how I stumbled on The Black Keys, the duo of Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach+ friends, but I’m a fan now. I auditioned their latest album, “Brothers,” with my 20-something friend April and she became an instant fan, too. A cross-generational hit! Check it out:

Another find this week: “How Sweet It Was,” a new cd/dvd compilation on gospel music recorded in the decade after WW II, from Shanachie Records, reviewed by NPR. Go to this npr.org page and DEFINITELY watch the video of Sister Rosetta Tharpe singing and playing a HOT HOT HOT guitar.

Don’t forget, the annual Summer Reading Call In is coming up, Tuesday, July 6 at 7 pm. We’re looking for your recommendations for summer reading–all genres, new or old, high-brow or potboiler. If you think it should be on the list, leave your suggestion below as a comment, or email me: [email protected].

Here’s my pick: Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn. A beautifully written quiet novel about a young Irish woman’s experience as an immigrant to the US. Find out more about this remarkable author at this NY Times page.

The Black Keys get a nod from the 30-somethings, too…thanks, Ellen!
