Out of the classroom, into the wild

What did you do the summer just before or after your graduation from college (or high school)?

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail route.

Four St. Lawrence University students–two May graduates and two who will return as seniors in the fall–have embarked on an adventure that only a handful of people have successfully completed: a non-stop canoe trip from Old Forge, New York to Fort Kent, Maine.

Billy McNamara, who is apprenticing at our farm this month, is a good friend of the four and is serving as their “base camp go-to” guy. When they can’t update the blog themselves, Billy makes an entry. So, I’m enjoying the trip vicariously.

In the year after I graduated from college, I bought a one way ticket to London, grabbed my fiddle and $200 and headed across the puddle to hitchhike around Europe for a year. What did you do? Or, if you’ve just graduated, what are you up to this summer? I hope there’s still room for adventure and exploration in young peoples’ lives.
