Are you picking peas yet?

I was so proud this morning when I went out to my garden for a morning check (always looking for changes, for bad bugs, for those first baby peppers emerging behind the blossoms) and found loads of blossoms on the pea plants. As I drove to work past the Little Grasse Foodworks CSA on Miner Street, just outside of Canton, I stopped to take a few photos.

Balloon burst. There was co-owner (Maria) Flip Filippi picking peas! I’m hoping for a July 4 harvest and she’s already putting peas in the CSA share boxes.

It’s great driving past Little Grasse CSA. I know their vegetables will always be a week or two ahead of what’s growing in my garden, but that’s okay. It’s a beautiful little farm and it makes me, well, happy to see how far they’ve come in the few years they’ve been running the CSA (“they” being Flip and her partner Bob Washo).

Below, a couple of photos from my garden this morning. Now, where are your photos? Remember, we’re tracking gardens through the summer–flowers, vegetables, patio tomatoes, whatever. Send me your photos! Weeds, bugs, problems, ingenious solutions. All photos go to [email protected] and you’ll see them posted here.

I picked the first handful of peas today. We’ve been eating greens like mad, trying to stay ahead. The beans are growing nicely.

My garden is now sheltering a young mourning dove. Now sure how he/she got into the enclosure, though I think the nest is in a pine tree that would be a quick glide away. We have a seven-foot fence, with a flat rail around the top. One parent (at least) camps out up there most of the day, and at night. The little one is getting used to my comings and goings, but the parents aren’t very welcoming. We had a baby robin inside earlier this season. And bluebirds sitting on the rail for weeks while they raised the brood nearby.
Oh, and…no peas at my place yet. Tarragon is about four feet high. And I’d love some nicotiana volunteers!

Visitors to my garden include the barn cat who is always after moles and voles and mice. Plus loads of spotted adders (aka milk snakes) who also help control crop-eating critters. And, yes, I’d be happy to bring some nicotiana into work for you, Martha. 🙂

Peas just beginning to blossom (must be a De Kalb thing), we’re also trying to keep ahead of the greens; bloody Romaine is 16″ tall and jumping another few inches every day…..

Trying potatoes in barrels this year; been meaning to for 40 years and just never got around to it. Actually using a couple of old plastic trash cans; something a bit different for the grandkids……
