Teens read, Judy Blume, and tough topics
Two emails today came together for me: one about Teen Read Week from the American Library Association’s Young Adult division, the other about one of the most-published authors of young adult and children’s literature, Judy Blume.
Here’s the thing: the connection is a tough one. Judy Blume was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer and she’s blogging about it. But she’s known for tackling difficult subjects forthrightly. It’s what’s made her so popular with teenagers–teenagers, the age group with the most finely tuned “baloney” detectors. (If I was Judy Blume, I’d probably use a different word than “baloney.”)
Blume has a wonderful website. You can check it out here.
And do check out Teen Read Week, coming up in October. Also of interest, lists and reading suggestions for young adults you’ll find in this earlier blog post.
