The Family that Weeds Together

From Carolyn Pierce, Heuvelton:

Here's my secret to a weed-free garden: sending the kids out to do the work.  Here's a photo of my son Connor diligently plucking the weeds from the corn rows.  He is by far my most dedicated weeder.

Connor Pierce weeds the corn rows in his family's garden.

The family gets involved in other garden projects too.

Brothers Connor and Reilly Pierce help build a bean house from cedar posts. (Click on tag below to see the finished project in an earlier post.) Younger siblings Carter and Maureen help in the background.

Make a Bean House – An Idea from the Pierce Family, Heuvelton

From Carolyn Pierce, Heuvelton:

When I first saw your post about Garden Plot, I wasn't sure I had anything "unique" to
share, but then I remembered the "edible bean house" we started this
year, so I thought I'd share some photos of it.

The Pierce Family in Heuvelton got the idea for this bean house from Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.

Beans make their way up their cedar house, along with morning glories for color. Reggie Pierce helps train the vines up.

We originally got the idea from the "idea garden" at Longwood gardens in

Philadelphia,PA (we were on a tour there with the 4H Horticulture club).

This spring we purchased some cedar poles from an Amish  neighbor, and
my boys built the frame.  We planted climbing beans, morning glories,
scarlet runner beans, and gourds around the base.  As you can see from
the pictures, it is starting to fill in nicely.
