GOP Assemblywoman Scozzafava endorses Owens

This isn’t a huge surprise, but Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava has now formally endorsed Democrat Bill Owens in the NY-23 congressional race

In a statement issues yesterday, Scozzafava said that Owens “provides the type of leadership we need that will work across the aisle for the best interest of all the citizens of New York’s 23rd Congressional District.

Scozzafava first endorsed Owens last year during the special election, when she was forced out of the House race by Conservative Doug Hoffman.

She is finishing up her term as Assemblywoman in the 122nd district, which includes parts of St. Lawrence, Lewis, Jefferson, and Oswego Counties.

Scozzafava isn’t seeking re-election.  In a statement, Owens said he was “honored” by her support.

His campaign also announced that two other Republican local government officials had endorsed him, from the town of Granby and the city of Fulton.

The Owens campaign also issued a statement of support yesterday from former St. Lawrence University president Daniel Sullivan, who retired last year.

Sullivan praised Owens for “open-mindedness and intellectual integrity.”

And, like most true statespeople who put the interests of their constituents above party or ideology, Dede will be labelled a traitor.

I am proud that she has been our voice in the Assembly. Although I have been a registered Dem since 1972, she has gotten my vote every time except her first run, when I did not know her.

    She will be missed.

Ditto, Dan3583…..I think she represented our district very well. She will indeed be missed.

Just another dig on her way out the door. Bitter comes to mind.
