North Country football squad advances to state championship

The General Brown High School Lions — from Dexter, just west of Watertown — triumphed on Saturday, fighting their way into the Class C state championship in Syracuse.  This from the Watertown Daily Times.

General Brown made north country high school football history Saturday by becoming the first team from the area to advance to a state football championship with its 19-14 victory over Fredonia at Marina Auto Stadium.

Meanwhile, two other North Country football dynasties were toppled over the weekend, with Saranac Lake (Class C) falling short against the Bronxville Broncos.  This from the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.

Bronxville running back Christian Conway racked up 269 yards and three touchdowns, earning offensive MVP honors for his efforts.

Saranac Lake did most of its damage through the air, as senior quarterback Forrest Morgan threw for 265 yards and a touchdown to keep the game within reach up until the fourth quarter when Bronxville pulled away.

In Class D play, the Moriah Vikings fell to Tuckahoe.  This from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican.

Moriah’s vaunted rushing attack was held to 86 yards on 33 carries, the first time it failed to crack 100 yards since losing to Randolph in the 2009 state title game.

It’s been a brilliant football year for the North Country and with the Lions advancing to the championships, the region has one more weekend of high school ball in store.  Go Lions!

terrific season by our northern football teams. congrats to the players, coaches and supporters.

isn’t funny how sports eliminates the arguments and sometimes bitter differences that we find in politics.

everyone pulls for their team, and we all become cheerleaders for our squad.

with that, i’m sure there’s a point to be made in there somewhere (or i would not have brought it up :)
