Tracking cougars, finding you

The last couple of weeks, I’ve been hanging out with scientists, naturalists and average Adirondackers who are fascinated by mountain lions.

I’ve trudged through the snow, looking at rocky bluffs in Clinton County where people claim they’ve seen cougars.

I talked in-depth with some of the best wildlife researchers in the US.  My stories will air this morning and again tomorrow during the 8 O’clock Hour.

While I was prowling the North Country in my beater pick-up truck, I was thinking about this week’s pledge drive.

Here’s the thing:  going deep into stories like this costs fairly big money.

And we get to dig this deep because you care enough about things like mountain lions — or the ghosts of mountain lions — to help out.

The truth is, radio stations like NCPR — small, rural networks — aren’t supposed to have the kind of resources that allow this kind of work.

We’re different, because you’re different.

Study after study shows that NCPR’s audience is more loyal, more passionate and more committed than almost any other public radio listeners in America.

So here’s the challenge:  think about the one story that you’ve heard this year that really mattered, and then give a little back, right now.

You can make a super easy $10 gift just be texting the message “NCPR” to the phone number 85944.

Or you can go to our main pledge page to choose from a bunch of cool thank-you gifts, while making a donation.

People debate whether mountain lions are still out there.  But we know you’re there.

So let us hear from you right now, to keep this kind of journalism alive in the North Country.

I will give more money, but only if you follow this up with a “looking for Champ” story.

Having been scuba diving, snorkeling, and swimming in Lake Champlain many times, I have kept a ready eye out for Champy.

It’s pretty murky — and kind of spooky — down there.

The good news is that I haven’t seen him, or her.

Of course, I would be equally terrified if I ran into a mountain lion in the woods.

Pledgers, though, I greet with undiluted enthusiasm!

But, I want there to be cougars in the Adirondacks! Can’t we have some, please???

    Such beautiful creatures.
