Camera tracks the progress of the Champlain Bridge arch

If you’re interested in following progress today as crews begin to install the big arch on the Crown Point bridge, you can check out this webcam, provided by NYS DOT, which refreshes every fifteen minutes.

The barge, tugs and arch haven’t come into the range of the camera yet, as of 8:00 am, but they should be showing up soon.  So keep checking back.

The launch this morning was beautiful.  Dead calm.  A bit of mist over the water.  Tugs slid the big arch away from Port Henry without a hitch.  Fifty or so people watched from the breakwater.  It was hushed and quiet.

As the arch began its journey south toward Crown Point, the sun rose over the Green Mountains.  Pretty cool…

This should be about as exciting as watching grass grow.

Maybe not too exciting to watch but it’s encouraging to see an infrastructure project of such importance actually be nearing completion. American workers installing American made “parts” if you will. It’s refreshing to see/hear good news for a change. Too bad we couldn’t do this on a gargantuan national scale from bridges to roads to buildings to mass transit to the antiquated and extremely inefficient electrical grid.

Exactly the kind of stimulus our economy needs. And one giant “Rebuild America” savings bond program every adult citizen could invest in with some sort of reasonable long term return to finance such a venture. With all the money on the side lines given the uncertainty of the stock market, the timing might be ideal for such a program. As someone in their early 40’s who’s lost significant value in my holdings, I’d be happy to get a guaranteed 4-5% return right about now from a portion of my portfolio. We’ve utilized such programs before and we could do it again. Such a program could be the cornerstone of the Obama administrations as yet non existent jobs program.
