Morning Read: Indian Lake Fireworks company sues Hamilton county for $11 million

Indian Lake resident Edward Meyer Jr. says Hamilton County’s fire coordinator libeled his business — Meyer Fireworks — by suggesting that the company’s plant  could have endangered the Indian Lake Central School if it had exploded back in 2010.

Meyer wants $11 million dollars in compensation, according to a report in the Hamilton County Express.

The lawsuit is based on remarks [Hamilton County fire coordinator Jay] Griffin allegedly made to The (Glens Falls) Post-Star newspaper after Meyer’s arrest. Meyer says Griffin speculated that, had the fireworks ignited, Indian Lake Central School would have been damaged.

Griffin has refused to comment on the matter.

In his lawsuit Meyer compares this to yelling “Fire!” in a crowded movie theater, and wrote, “no explosive engineering opinion could or would ever prove that a deflagration of [my] almost 30-year-old, accident-free facility could or would damage or destroy [the school or harm its students].”

Meyer’s operation in Indian Lake has faced scrutiny and probes by state and Federal officials.  Following one investigation, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, according to the newspaper.  Read the full article here.
