Speculation continues to build about new candidates entering the North Country’s congressional race, now that Democrat Bill Owens has bowed out of this year’s election.

Democratic Assemblywoman Addie Russell from Theresa has told news organizations that she’s considering a run and she’s scheduled a news conference for tomorrow.

Former Queensbury congressman Scott Murphy — also a Democrat — has told the Glens Falls Post Star that he’s not ruling out a bid for the seat.

The Post Star is also reporting that Warren County district attorney Kate Hogan and former candidate Matt Doheny are also considering a bid on the Republican ticket.

Meanwhile, Congressman Paul Ryan, one of the GOP’s leaders in Washington, sent a tweet this week endorsing Elise Stefanik, who moved to Essex County last year to position herself for a run for the seat.

Stefanik, a former White House staffer, worked on Ryan’s 2012 presidential campaign.

  1. Kate Hogan would be crucified by the Tea Party fanatics.

  2. Pete Klein says:

Should be a lot of fun for the news junkies who are always in search of a cat and dog fight.
For the rest of us it probably means months and months of “news” and ads that will cause wide spread nausea.

Pete – You remember that this stuff – candidates, elections, debates — is what democracy is about, right?

    –Brian, NCPR

Addie Russell, who I like and would be happy to vote for, may not be viable because of her vote for NYSAFE. It would really bring the gun advocates to the polls to vote against her. Scott Murphy is an intriguing option – he was a fine Congressman, and cuts a similar (though younger) profile to Bill Owens.

  5. Brian M: Perhaps Pete’s complaint is that while those things are part of what democracy is about, it’s not all of what they’re about. Perhaps he, like many others, think the horse race stuff is increasingly crowding out real journalism. Not on NCPR perhaps, but in most other outlets. This makes what NCPR offers more valuable, by its rarity, but makes us poorer as a theoretically democratic society.

  6. It’ll be interesting to see if the GOP (and Dem, if they have multiple candidates) politburos will allow the ordinary rank and file voters a role in the process or whether the politburos will rig the game and pressure all but their anointed candidate to withdraw before the primary election. This rigging is one thing I absolutely loathe about how elections are conducted around here. It defeats the whole purpose of the primary process by having the grand pooh-bahs tell the voters that they’re too stupid to make their own decision.

Wonder if Dede will throw her hat in the ring.

  8. Judy says:

If only we had open primaries. Party declaration really limits the democratic process.

I still think Ellen Rocco would be a great representative.

    How about Dan Stewart?

I would be a bit surprised if Rabideau runs. There’s so much going on in Saranac Lake right now with the two hotels, I would think he would want to shepherd all that through before moving on.

If I was Rabideau, I’d pray a weaker Republican wins this year and gear up for 2016.

There is a young man who is from the North Country, has worked for Hillary and now works for Gillibrand who would be a great young candidate, his name is John Cardinal.
