To me, it's the true beginning of summer – when the strawberries are rock-star sweet and juicy. I've gotten a couple pints of local strawberries from my neighborhood store already, but they haven't yet reached that utmost perfection of form and flavor.

At Martin's Farmstand, outside Potsdam, they're still ripening. Daniel Martin says U-pick is about ten days away.

What's the strawberry crop looking like in your neck of the woods? If you're picking and gathering (or eating) them, send a picture of someone doing just that, to david-at-ncpr-dot-org. Happy strawberry season!

  1. Excellent news! I picked last year in some of that terribly dry weather, and what a job it was. Turns out that it take way more little berries to fill a basket than it would if they were big, and I worked for hours to fill my assignment. (How did I get roped into that anyhow??)
They were delicious, and still are, with just a few left in the freezer. If we have a bumper crop year, we'll make jam too.
