Tomorrow at its flagship store in suburban Rochester, Wegmans superstores will unveil a new partnership with Cornell University and a handful of cheesemakers to boost sales and quality of New York cheese.
According to Cornell's press release, the partnership will attempt to drive "increased economic opportunity for dairy farmers and new high-quality products for consumers." The program already has three large cheddar cheese making partners, including Great Lakes cheese in Adams in Jefferson County. Also, half a dozen "micro" artesanal cheesemakers will take training classes to boost the quality and reach of their product.
New York Agriculture Commissioner, and former dairy farmer, Darrel Aubertine will be on hand, as will Cornell's Ag and Life Sciences Dean, and…Danny Wegman himself!
Here's more about the background of the program, from Cornell.
