Dirt Pics: Apples on the soccer field
Becky and Joel Howie manage Canton Apples. Photo: David Sommerstein.
Dirt Pics is an ongoing series telling the story of agriculture and farmers one photo at a time. Send a photo of your farm, product, field, market stand, or any other aspect of farming – hopefully with a person or people in the picture – to david-at-ncpr-dot-org. Please be sure to include full names and a caption that tells the story of what’s happening in the photo.
If you have an apple tree in your yard, you know it's been a crazy bumper crop this year. Some of the branches on our 100 year-old tree have slumped with the weight of the apples.
I bumped into Joel and Becky Howie of Canton Apples while they were sharing the fruit of their harvest with Canton's future soccer players. The Howies were distributing apples to the dozens of kids playing in the Canton soccer program Monday night. My daughter's in the program.
The Howies have managed 150 trees on 2.5 acres for three years now. They both have full-time jobs, but Joel says it's a special, peaceful place where he and his son, Luke, get to spend quality time together.
Here's to healthy snacks for exercising kids! Thanks, Joel and Becky!
