Celebrating Mother Nature Day
I was outside this morning in my rainy day boots, pajamas, and winter jacket picking rhubarb in the SNOW. “This is just wrong!” ripped from my lips. “It’s May 9th for crying out loud!”
As I dusted the snow from the rhubarb leaves, I noticed my 11 year old Golden Retriever Herman running through the yard and jumping like a puppy. Then it occurred to met that I wasn’t being attacked by skeeters or black flies and I had yet to step on a snake. Maybe this isn’t so bad after all.
After cutting off the leaves and throwing them in the field beside my house, I gathered up my harvest and ran through the falling snow, with Herman, heading to the house. In wet pajama bottoms I cut the crop into pieces and lingered in the kitchen for a while to enjoy the aroma of baking pies. What a smell!!
They will taste especially sweet this year — perhaps it wasn’t snow, just falling sugar.
This is fun. Back to the patch….
Happy Mother’s Day!
