Field Note from Florida: heron sign

Actually, mostly this photo. I like to watch birds. On vacation last week we were watching a great blue heron who had laid claim to a key spot on the breakwater at Passagrille, the far end of St. Pete beach in St. Petersburg, Florida. We got closer and closer, me with my cellphone on the ready to snap a photo, which I did as he looked our way. He eventually hand flew, half clambered off the walkway. I couldn’t resist this second shot. Curt Stager has always wanted to do a good treatment of “scat” for Natural Selections. This may be the time!
