Soaking Up the Sun
Don’t know what it is about snakes…seems like most people don’t like them, perhaps because fear of poisonous and killer snakes is part of our genetic code. But in the North Country most all are pretty harmless, at least to humans. They certainly can startle when they turn up in surprising and unexpected places. But I like these garter snakes a lot. Pretty green and yellow stripes, they live in the mint and phlox on our lower deck and have been coming out each morning to soak up the sun and enjoy each other’s company. Big and little ones. I counted nine this morning, some in a row, some cuddled up with each other. I thought the young didn’t hatch until later in the season. Can anyone tell us more about these snakes?
