Not Stevie Wonder, not Stevie Ray Vaughan, not Steve Van Zant…Steven Sauter. I’ve known Steve since the day he was born (to program director Jackie Sauter, and Radio Bob Sauter, our engineer). Now, at 25, he’s my idol. He’s a natural performer, but somehow I’d never caught any of his appearances in local theater and music productions. Yesterday, Jackie sent me the video Bob made of Steve’s recent performance in the talent show at the annual Down Syndrome conference in Orlando. Go, Steve!
All In is a place for everyone who works at NCPR to share behind the scenes activity, and surprising, curious, lovely or distinctly local tidbits from our travels around the region. We’ll post the best of what we find online, too. From time to time, you may hear from others—if you’d like to write an entry, send it to [email protected]. What makes this place what it is? How do we connect to each other and the world? That’s what ALL IN is all about.
People with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities should, can and do live rich, full lives that include employment, post-secondary education and artistic expression. They want to be good and productive citizens in their communities and make a positive difference in the world. For more information about Down syndrome see ndss.org and ndsccenter.org. Here in northern New York there are many organizations that help and support people with disabilities and their families. It’s been said that at one time or another, almost all of us will experience a disability of some sort. We can help each other and our children by encouraging opportunities and inclusion for all. We are all more alike than different.

I got to see this live – what an honor! Steven, you Rock! Steve was one of 350 self-advocates at the conference, some who drive, attend college, get married, swim the English Channel, and lead exciting, fulfilling lives. What a great role model for the North Country.
Whoo Hoo Steve! Awesome, just awesome! We love you and are so proud of you. You are an inspiration to Nick! He watched your video over and over again. Lots of love to you…..

Steve,
Your talent really stood out at the conference. It is a treat to re-live it electronically. It was great being with you and your parents in Orlando.
