Technology, aah, technology

Traveled recently to see friends in Denmark. Went through a lot of airport security checks, so this article from ProPublica (an independent online journalism nonprofit) jumped out at me from today’s email. I had passed through no less than five security checks before someone questioned my contact lens solution (over 4 fluid ounces) and made me discard it. Is there any substance that could cause damage to a plane at 4.1 fluid ounces vs. 3.9 fluid ounces? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for safe flying, but the gaps and inconsistencies in the security system are substantial.

Worse: when I went to download photos from my trip, no dice. Over a hundred black and empty squares. What did I do wrong? All I know is that I won’t be showing you photos of the North Sea taken from WWII German-built bunkers on the Danish coast (Hitler thought the Allied invasion would come through Denmark, hence the defensive build up there), or photos of perfectly manicured Danish fields and farm courtyards, or …maybe you’re glad my photos disappeared into the technological ether…

Welcome home, Ellen. Those photos would have been nice to see.

Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy holiday to all at NCPR.

I can send you some pictures of German bunker from Arcachon that were built atop giant dunes and are slowly sliding into the ocean if it will help.

    Merry Christmas.
But a bah and a humbug to the security people.
I have no intention of every leaving this country unless a decide to leave forever. I have no intention of ever getting on a commercial airline again.
We have lost the war on terrorism by doing more damage to ourselves than the terrorist have ever done.

May I add a North Country story to your post? A few months ago I visited some folks in Saranac Lake. To do so, I passed, without incident, through the massive security operations in Dallas, Chicago, and Boston. When it was time to depart, I was subjected to security screening by the three (three!) security officers in Saranac …..whereupon a 4 ounce bottle of Fray-Check was seized from my knitting bag.

Lesson Learned: Terrorists posing as Little Old Ladies had best not launch any mischief from Saranac Lake, New York.

    Knucklehead and all,
Retrieved my pictures–actually, it turned out they were never lost. It was, what we call here at the station, OE (operator error), which means I made a mistake which was easily corrected. Will post a few bunker photos next week. Happy New Year.
