Question of the Day: White Chocolate?

Oxymoron of the Day: White Chocolate

Happy Valentine’s Day! According to Wikipedia:

Saint Valentine’s Day, often simply Valentine’s Day, is a holiday observed on February 14 honoring one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentinus. It was first established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD, and was later deleted from the General Roman Calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. It is celebrated in countries around the world, mostly in the West, although it remains a working day in all of them.

The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards…

While white chocolate can be loosely described as a confectionery, today’s Question of the Day is:

White chocolate–can you really call it chocolate?

    Jabberwocky
    Lewis Carroll
    (mis-remebered by Peter Mansbach)

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy fudge
Did gyre and truffle in the wabe,
    All Mansbach were the Häagen-Dazs,
    And the chocolate outgrabe.

    The Raven
    Edgar Allan Poe
    (mis-remebered by Peter Mansbach)

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a dense and turgid manual of computer lore–
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly I heard a tapping,
‘Twas the Raven, fast devouring chocolate goodies from my store,
Eating brownies, cookies, truffles, chocolate cream pies, cakes galore–
–“Take thy beak from out my chocolate, take thee hence and eat no more.”
    Quoth the Raven, “CHOCOLATE. MORE.”

Okay, there it is: Neither Jabberwocks nor Ravens *ever* had white chocolate, perish the thought, in mind.
