Mainstage was authentic old-school soul man Lee Fields &amp; his tremendous band The Expressions, \u201cbringing it\u201d to the park with a solid showcase of timeless authentic soul.<\/p>\n<p>With a career spanning 43 years, the North Carolina native has toured with a who&#8217;s-who of soul legends, and is often compared to the Godfather himself, James Brown, in terms of his deep rich tones and gritty yet powerful phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>His set included a string of timeless and powerful selections from his latest release \u201cFaithful Man\u201d that only exemplifies the fact that vintage soul is still alive and well in today\u2019s modern world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12055\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2014\/09\/JCole_03.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12055\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12055\" alt=\"JCole_03\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2014\/09\/JCole_03-e1410722912250.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">North Carolina singer J. Mainstage with Brooklyn&#8217;s indie rock sensation \u2018The National\u2019 lead by frontman and songwriter Matt Berninger.<\/p>\n<p>Opening up with \u201cDon\u2019t Swallow the Cap\u201d from their critically acclaimed 2013 release \u201cTrouble Will Find Me\u201d the band continued through their catalogue with a series of melodic yet introspective, and often world-weary contemplations on love, self-destruction and the monotony of urban paradigm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12062\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2014\/09\/The-National_07.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12062\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12062  \" alt=\"Bryce Dressner, guitarist for The National, at the Ottawa Folk Festival\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2014\/09\/The-National_07-e1410728352290.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bryce Dressner, guitarist for The National, at the Ottawa Folk Festival<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Themes accentuated by the dark baritone vocals (notably reminiscent of musical precursors like that of late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis) complimented the bands lush tones against a tepid backdrop of illumination on stage.
