{"id":1220,"date":"2011-06-17T16:35:21","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T20:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/?p=1220"},"modified":"2011-06-17T16:35:26","modified_gmt":"2011-06-17T20:35:26","slug":"at-the-feed-store-this-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2011\/06\/17\/at-the-feed-store-this-morning\/","title":{"rendered":"At the feed store this morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Picking up some feed for my baby chicks, I remarked on the price of corn to Jack, who was loading the bags of grain into the back of my car. &#8220;Corn&#8217;s gone up a lot lately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah,&#8221; he replies. &#8220;Bad weather in the midwest, commodities futures, and ethanol production. I&#8217;m growing corn myself, might as well make a few bucks while the price is high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those are his words, almost verbatim. He went on at length about how silly it is to grow corn for automotive fuel. And here I had thought just professionally &#8220;green&#8221; people felt that way.<\/p>\n<p>This is just a tiny little piece of what&#8217;s going to be considered next year when Congress works on a new <a href=\"vhttp:\/\/www.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/usda\/farmbill2008?navid=FARMBILL2008\">Farm Bill<\/a>. That link will take you to the USDA official page on the farm bill of 2008. And here&#8217;s a<a href=\"http:\/\/simplegoodandtasty.com\/2010\/10\/21\/a-farm-bill-primer-getting-ready-for-2012\"> link<\/a> to a more &#8220;alternative&#8221; perspective, though based on Jack&#8217;s remarks this morning, there&#8217;s growing consternation about US food and farm policies and &#8220;alternative&#8221; may no longer apply.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, here&#8217;s a hopeful <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/22\/food-six-things-to-feel-good-about\/?hp\">column<\/a> from Mark Bittman, former food critic for the NY Times, now writing regular opinion pieces for that paper on food and agriculture related topics. Aw, heck, I love Bittman&#8217;s &#8220;how to&#8221; video clips.
