{"id":1251,"date":"2011-06-20T22:59:25","date_gmt":"2011-06-21T02:59:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/?p=1251"},"modified":"2011-06-21T07:55:12","modified_gmt":"2011-06-21T11:55:12","slug":"rb-bike-trip-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2011\/06\/20\/rb-bike-trip-day-3\/","title":{"rendered":"RB Bike Trip Day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, I was feeling not challenged enough!\u00a0 HA!\u00a0 Got up this morning and wanted to chuck it all, as they say in British Mystery Novels.\u00a0 I was tired, clammy and cold and there was a head breeze to boot.\u00a0 But after a couple of hours, I started to feel better, and eventually rode about 68 miles (in 7 hours 10 minutes)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m now in my suite of rooms here in Clifton Park, trying to stay awake long enough to finish this post, so lets talk about equipment.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a Fuji touring bicycle&#8230;..<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1252\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/bobbike.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1252\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1252\" title=\"bobbike\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/bobbike.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/bobbike.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/bobbike-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob&#39;s Bike<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Its a 27 speed&#8230; I know you might be pooh-poohing multiple gears as elitist!\u00a0 But they really make the difference between pain and mere discomfort.\u00a0 Riders really can pedal at a limited range of pedal speeds&#8230; too slow and it ruins your knees&#8230;. too fast and &#8230; its too fast!\u00a0 So you&#8217;re ALWAYS shifting.\u00a0 ifwqqqqqqqqqqqqqxxxxxx\u00a0 Oops, just dozed off&#8230;. sorry.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, imagine you&#8217;re driving your car but you can&#8217;t push the gas pedal down more than about 10% of its travel.\u00a0 When you get to a hll, if you can do some quick shifting, the car will slow way down, but you&#8217;ll make it to the summit.\u00a0 Me, I&#8217;m often cruising along at 12-13 MPH, but slow down to as little as 3.9 mph for the really tough hills.\u00a0 You just have to keep saying to yourself &#8220;even though your going walking speed, if you keep going you&#8217;ll eventually get up the hill&#8221;\u00a0 This little mantra works wonders.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a pair of panniers over the back wheel, spare parts (tubes, tires, tools) and changes of clothes&#8230;
