{"id":1255,"date":"2011-06-22T07:55:44","date_gmt":"2011-06-22T11:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2011-06-22T07:55:44","modified_gmt":"2011-06-22T11:55:44","slug":"rb-bike-trip-take-3-day-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2011\/06\/22\/rb-bike-trip-take-3-day-4\/","title":{"rendered":"RB Bike trip take 3, day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I woke up this morning in my &#8220;suite&#8221; in Clifton Park, (the only room available)\u00a0 absolutely not wanting to go for a long bike ride.\u00a0 Physically, I felt fine, but psychologically speaking, I was a mess!\u00a0 I just wanted to stay in my safe suite and while away my time watching TV and doing crossword puzzles.\u00a0 I wanted to go home! in Clifton Park <\/p><\/div>\n<p>A good part of the morning was spent avoiding Albany traffic by skirting the lovely Tomhannock Reservoir:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1258\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/tomhannock-res1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1258\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1258\" title=\"tomhannock res\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/tomhannock-res1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/tomhannock-res1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/tomhannock-res1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">the lovely Tomhanks reservoir<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At 2 pm I tackled &#8220;the Hill&#8221;.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically a 4 mile stretch of road east of North Adams, Ma, that climbs 1500 feet and takes you high up in the Berkshires.\u00a0 Anyway, I&#8217;ve begun to categorize climbs based on how long I have\u00a0 to crawl along\u00a0 in my lowest of low gears, typically at about 4.1 mph.\u00a0 For example near my home in North Russell there is a 5 minute hill, etc.\u00a0 This monster climb too 45 minutes, plus an extra 15 minutes (after the switchback) and another 10 minutes at the &#8220;Whitcomb Summit&#8221;.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s my bike at the switchback:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/hairpin-turn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1259\" title=\"hairpin turn\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/hairpin-turn.jpg\" alt=\"Hairpin turn on the &quot;Mohawk Trail&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/hairpin-turn.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/hairpin-turn-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By now I&#8217;d remembered that last year I ended up cycling 100 miles in one day (a Century) which I knew that I didn&#8217;t want to repeat.\u00a0 (for one thing mild headwinds are predicted for the next few days and the Century last year was, admittedly, with a tail wind!) &#8230; so instead of crashing for the night at the lovely Whitcomb Summit Motel, I kept going another 20 miles to Shelburne Falls&#8230; bringing today&#8217;s total to 78 miles (including the Hill)<\/p>\n<p>Shelburne Falls is a pleasant town, with restaurants, shops a trolley museum and the &#8220;Flower Bridge&#8221;.\u00a0 Apparently when a 20-year old trolley bridge was abandoned in 1929, some local residents converted it into a garden!\u00a0 It really is lovely.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1260\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/flower-bridge.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1260\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1260\" title=\"flower bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/flower-bridge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/flower-bridge.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/flower-bridge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flower Bridge, Shelburne Falls, MA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tonight, I&#8217;m staying at the &#8220;Dancing Bear&#8221;
