{"id":1265,"date":"2011-06-23T22:28:14","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T02:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/?p=1265"},"modified":"2011-06-23T22:28:14","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T02:28:14","slug":"bob-bike-trip-3-day-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2011\/06\/23\/bob-bike-trip-3-day-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Bob Bike Trip (3) Day #6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And it DID rain&#8230; but a successful day nevertheless!\u00a0 First my rescurer, Dave Doherty, took me on a tour of several of the radio stations at which he works &#8230; all in Providence, RI:\u00a0 Here he is at WRNI AM&#8217;s antenna &#8220;farm&#8221; (yes, that&#8217;s what they call them) in a swamp<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1266\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/dave.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1266\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1266\" title=\"dave\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/dave.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/dave.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/dave-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave at Rhode Island Public Radio&#39;s own swamp!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yes, AM radio station towers are usually at low, wet spots, whilst FM stations are typically on hills, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Then we went to the ultimate AM tower site&#8230;. a tower built on a man-made island!\u00a0 Dave uses a boat to get to this one&#8230; and yes, the island has deteriorated over the last 50 years or so!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1267\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/wstl.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1267\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1267\" title=\"wstl\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/wstl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/wstl.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2011\/06\/wstl-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Island Radio<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He saved the best for last:\u00a0 we visited WBRU (Brown University) which is a very unique station.\u00a0 As you know NCPR was originally only WSLU, a non-commercial station licensed to St. Lawrence University.\u00a0 Being a non-commrecial station means, no c0mmercials, so we have to realy on program underwriting and donations to keep the money flowing.<\/p>\n<p>WBRU, however is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">commercial<\/span> station operated by students (with a professional management and sales staff) and they are actually very successful&#8230; rating in the top 3 stations in their market for every reporting period! Its ALL commercials for them!
