NCPR has reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/thedirt\/2013\/02\/01\/monday-kickoff-nys-newest-microbreweries-whats-your-fave\/\">micro-breweries<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/25893\/20140901\/paul-smith-s-taps-into-a-craft-beer-lover-s-education\">craft beer studies<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/21459\/20130218\/what-north-country-wineries-are-doing-right\">wine producers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/25571\/20140729\/bella-brooke-winery-a-stop-on-the-st-lawrence-county-wine-trail\">wine trails<\/a> and experimental crops, like <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2014\/09\/27\/quebec-farm-tries-exotic-crop-saffron\/\">saffron<\/a>. Cocoa beans don&#8217;t grow here but it turns out our region makes some pretty good chocolate too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/life\/food\/almonte-chocolate-maker-honoured-at-americas-contest\">Laura Robin in the Ottawa Citizen<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/hummingbirdchocolate.com\/\">Hummingbird Chocolate Maker<\/a>,\u00a0a three-year-old bean-to-bar chocolate company based in Almonte, has won a second set of honours in as many weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The International Chocolate Awards 2014 announced Monday Hummingbird has won Bronze in the Plain Dark Single-Origin category in the intensely competitive Americas semi-finals for its Hispaniola bar, which is made with beans from the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Hummingbird won Silver\u00a0in the Canada-wide competition in the\u00a0\u201cdark chocolate bars flavoured with an infusion or flavouring\u201d category for its Fleur de Sel bar, which is also made with beans from the Dominican Republic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not knowing much about the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalchocolateawards.com\/\"> International Chocolate Awards<\/a> I went to their website. Wow, what an amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalchocolateawards.com\/2014\/10\/americas-semi-final-2014-winners-international-chocolate-awards\/\">number of categories<\/a>! And how might one apply to be a judge? (Hmm, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalchocolateawards.com\/grand-jury-profiles\/\">experts only<\/a>. Too bad.)<\/p>\n<p>Vermont&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakechamplainchocolates.com\/about-us\/our-history\/\">Lake Champlain Chocolates (est. 1983)<\/a>\u00a0has its own bean-to-bar award winner in a new line under the Blue Bandana label: &#8220;winner of the 2014 Good Food Awards for its\u00a070% Madagascar Dark Chocolate Bar\u00a0and\u00a070% Madagascar Wild Pepper Dark Chocolate Bar.&#8221; Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakechamplainchocolates.com\/about-us\/bean-to-bar-chocolate\/\">company Q &amp; A<\/a> with Eric Lampman about that award and why he wanted to work on single-origin craft chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Truth be told, it&#8217;s hard to write about all this without wanting to do more investigative reporting and some quality control sampling.
