As I wrote here back in November<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Two years ago I had this idea that each month of the year shone with its own unique quality of light, and that I should write a twelve-poem cycle that would capture those qualities. Until yesterday, I had managed to write one\u2013for August<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now I have finished a third, for May, sliding in just under the month-end deadline.<\/p>\n

May Light<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are only two seasons in the North Country
\nwinter and not-winter. April was cruel as usual,
\narbitrary, fickle, indecisive\u2014unable to pick a side\u2014
\nuntil May delivered what April only pretended.<\/p>\n

You drowse away through the dawn chorus,
\nbut when you do rise it’s already full light,
\nso bright you squint out the kitchen window
\nwaiting for the coffee to filter through.<\/p>\n

What began as a yellow-green haze softening
\nthe black outlines of the maple’s branches
\nhas popped a green so lurid you would call it
\n“not found in nature” but for\u00a0the plain evidence.<\/p>\n

And the air is a fresh rain-washed blue, so clear
\nthe distant hills will be sharp at the horizon.
\nA confection of cumulus dots the sky, still cool,
\nbut on the short-sleeves side of cool, for once.<\/p>\n

So you step out into the sweet scent of lilacs,
\ninto the swell of bee buzz and bird song
\nto lever your sluggish bones behind the wheel.
