It was my 31<sup>st<\/sup> drive since joining the NCPR staff in 2001 and I have to say, our best ever, thanks to you all. It&#8217;s always a big lift; it takes a lot of work and it could get old if all NCPR accomplished was to keep the lights on and the transmitters hot and the website up for another six months of doing what we always do.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16772\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2016\/04\/award-155595_960_720.png\" alt=\"award-155595_960_720\" width=\"450\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2016\/04\/award-155595_960_720.png 450w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2016\/04\/award-155595_960_720-279x300.png 279w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>But we do more than that and we keep trying to do better. And it pays off, not just in your continued support. In addition to being poetry month, April is also the month when many awards are given to broadcasters and journalists: the Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi awards, the Gabriel awards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NCPR cleaned up this year. We&#8217;re going to need more wall space.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Natasha Haverty, David Sommerstein and Martha Foley brought home the SPJ best in the nation award for <strong>Radio Investigative Reporting<\/strong> with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/28539\/20150605\/why-is-justice-for-garrett-phillips-so-complicated\">Why is justice for Garrett Phillips so complicated?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NCPR brought home four different Edward R. Murrow awards in our mid-Atlantic state region for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Overall Excellence <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Continuing Coverage<\/strong> \u2013 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/tags\/dannemora\">New York\u2019s Clinton-Dannemora Prison Break<\/a>, <\/strong>for the news team\u2019s extended reporting on the 2015 Dannemora prison break, led by Brian Mann and Zach Hirsch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reporting: Sports<\/strong> \u2013 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/27557\/20150220\/why-you-ve-never-heard-of-the-first-black-american-hockey-player\">Why You\u2019ve Never Heard of the First Black American Hockey Player<\/a><\/strong>, by David Sommerstein.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Website Excellence<\/strong> \u2013 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\">ncpr.org<\/a><\/strong>, for NCPR\u2019s combined news and digital team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ellen Rocco and Brit Hanson brought home a <strong>Gabriel Award<\/strong>, given in recognition of journalism that explores and expands the human spirit, for their digital-only piece <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/series\/top\/14\/coming-to-the-north-country-pierre-cameroon\">Coming to the North Country: Pierre, Cameroon.<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty sweet to see all that hard work bear fruit. It&#8217;s what you get when a whole community, a whole region comes together to make the work of public service journalism a reality.
