One of the truly great American music-makers.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She was 15 when she recorded her first record&#8211;and first hit: &#8220;Roll With Me Henry&#8221;&#8211;in 1954. She sang for us for 58 of her 73 years.\u00a0 Reading the message that Etta James had died, I pulled in a gulp of air and breathed out,\u00a0 &#8220;Oh no.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can check out the details of her life at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etta_James\">wiki<\/a> entry, or look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/21\/arts\/music\/etta-james-singer-dies-at-73.html?emc=na\">NY Times<\/a> obit. I liked the piece Neda Ulaby did for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/01\/20\/123125338\/remembering-etta-james-stunning-singer?sc=nl&amp;cc=brk-20120120-1154\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I loved her voice&#8211;from the early material like &#8220;Something&#8217;s Got a Hold on Me&#8221; to the incredible cd of a few years ago, &#8220;Blues to the Bone.&#8221; Why did I love her voice&#8211;why do I love any voice?
