Photo: James Morgan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The countryside north of Kingston is a natural art gallery of forests, lakes, and Canadian Shield rock.\u00a0 A small part of it is a real art gallery too.\u00a0 The Godfrey Sculpture Park is located near the hamlet of Godfrey.\u00a0 It\u2019s on the bucolic 60-acre property where sculptor Stefan Duerst has his studio.\u00a0 Originally from Munich, Germany, he trained there as a metal fabricator and blacksmith.\u00a0 He immigrated to Canada 15 years ago and had a shop in Kingston before relocating to his rural home six years ago with his wife and two children.\u00a0 The sculpture park opened last year and features Duerst\u2019s work along with sculptors Chaka Chikodzi, Kevin Lockau, and German graffiti artist \u201cloomit.\u201d\u00a0 Duerst wants to attract more artists to showcase their work at the park and to create a tranquil space that people can visit to learn and practice activities like yoga and meditation.\u00a0 He\u2019s also a certified Jin Shin Do(R) accupressurist and offers treatments.\u00a0 In addition to the sculptures, the property has a trail through the forest that goes past a beaver pond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19451\" style=\"width: 870px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3361.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19451\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-19451\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3361-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Stefan Duerst with a sculpture he created in collaboration with German graffiti artist &quot;'loomit.&quot;  Photo: James Morgan\" width=\"860\" height=\"645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3361-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3361-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3361-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stefan Duerst with a sculpture he created in collaboration with German graffiti artist &#8220;&#8216;loomit.&#8221; Photo: James Morgan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stefan Duerst\u2019s work is in public places across Canada and the world.\u00a0 He\u2019s done commissioned works for government, corporations, and charities.\u00a0 Tony Orr works as his fabrication assistant.\u00a0 Orr is also a long-time broadcaster on radio stations in Kingston.\u00a0 He was also a Broadcast Journalism instructor for several years at Loyalist community college in Belleville.\u00a0 Duerst said his rural neighbors have been supportive of the Godfrey Sculpture Park because it\u2019s bringing visitors to the community, which relies mostly on small-scale agriculture and seasonal tourism for economic activity.\u00a0 The rugged landscape on this former farm accentuates the sculptures.\u00a0 It gives visitors the opportunity to reflect and interpret what they see.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19450\" style=\"width: 870px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3338.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19450\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-19450\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/files\/2017\/06\/DSCN3338-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Yellow metal on rock contrasting with green sumac.
