I couldn&#8217;t get my mind around it. Benches<br \/>\nalong The Marginal Way are full today &#8212;<br \/>\nfinally some sun and that unbroken view<br \/>\nfrom here clear to the curve of the earth.<\/p>\n<p>What is near is sweet: sun, wind, rock<br \/>\nbreaking water, water breaking rock,<br \/>\nplains of marsh grass, bright beach rose<br \/>\nand gnarled cedar, your arm around me,<br \/>\nthe cries of gulls, the trill of songbirds.<br \/>\nBut my eyes seek beyond the breakers.<\/p>\n<p>The ocean drags at me as the moon<br \/>\ndrags at the sea. Just to see is to be<br \/>\nimmersed; just to hear to be in synch.<br \/>\n&#8220;Attention,&#8221; Mary Oliver writes,<br \/>\n&#8220;is the beginning of devotion.&#8221; And<br \/>\nmy attention is drawn to distances.<\/p>\n<p>Winding our way back, I drift in<br \/>\nand out of our conversation, distracted<br \/>\nby the one word the Atlantic booms<br \/>\nwithout ceasing.
