On Monday while Brian Mann was soldiering up the heights of Mount Marcy with eclipse glasses and sound kit<\/a>, others from the station were embarking from Morristown aboard Radio Bob’s leisure research vessel Little Queenie<\/em> to experience the eclipse from the downstream end of the Thousand Islands. Here is a poetical postcard.<\/p>\n

Eclipse voyage<\/h3>\n

Having basked enough for now
\nI walk off into pine shadow, leaving
\nthe boys to snorkel around the boat.
\nAt a picnic table the others swap
\nturns peering into a small hand-held
\ndevice made from a box of Raisin Bran
\nand other common household products
\nwhile the moon bites into the sun.<\/p>\n

The dimming light has gone strange,
\nlike the golden hour, David says, but not.<\/p>\n

At the upstream end of Sparrow Island
\nthe anchor of the Lillie Parsons<\/em> trails
\nits chain into dancing water.
\nStanding there, I imagine the squall,
\nthe chancy currents where she grounded
\nin 1877, imagine the chain leading 65 feet
\nbelow to where her 500 tons of coal
\nstrew like dark stars across the bottom.<\/p>\n

I view an image of the eaten sun
\nthrough a lattice of my fingers;
\nthrough the lattice of the past,
\nI see the schooner break its bones
\nupon the rocks. Until upstream
\na laker sounds five blasts, dispelling
\nreverie, eclipsing this pinhole
