Whether you love your work or not, it can be hard to get started some days. And never more than during\u00a0the dimmer\u00a0\u00a0months of the year. I can only conclude that that’s why God made coffee.<\/p>\n

Leaving for work in November<\/h3>\n

Not yet dawn, but already geese racket
\non the river, marshaling their convoys
\nfor the next stage south.<\/p>\n

The leaves are all down, but for a few
\nbright tatters that will emerge in sunrise
\nlike an empty street after Mardi Gras.<\/p>\n

Homeless deer nose through the leavings
\nof the apple tree while my coffee brews
\nand the news honks away on the radio.<\/p>\n

After the curtain falls on fall and before
\nit rises on winter is too long
\nan intermission, November.<\/p>\n

The house lights come up in gray sky
\nover brown ground slick with rain.
\nI blink the world back into focus.<\/p>\n

The geese all rise at once, loud and full
\nof purpose, up the aisles of air, guided
\nby some lodestone in the brain.<\/p>\n

I keep to my seat, thinking,
\none more cup of coffee, one more,
