In May of 2015, I wrote these words in the Listening Post:<\/p>\n

“Whenever I see a trillium, I want to stop and breathe, to do nothing but be in the presence. And then I want to write a poem; I want to consider perfection, purity, evanescence. A trillium is a thing seen that points to things unseen. I haven\u2019t written that poem yet\u2026”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This morning it was time to write that poem.<\/p>\n

The harbinger<\/h3>\n

Winter wrecked the woods again.
\nBroken beeches lean on the pines.
\nSnapped limbs loom over underbrush
\nand little bones litter\u00a0leaves
\nbelow the bole where waits the owl.<\/p>\n

Having longed\u00a0so long for snow to go
\nthe heart now hurts to count the cost
\nof what’s revealed and what was lost.<\/p>\n

And yet, there’s ease in sultry air
\nwhen stripes of sun strike everywhere
\nto free the reek of rain-soft duff.<\/p>\n

There, down the bank, a harbinger–
\na gleam beside this cold rill\u00a0roiled
\nwith runoff, thick with snags–
\na thing seen points to things unseen:
