Special shout outs to NCPR&#8217;s Brian Mann for his award-winning piece, to our good friend photographer Nancie Battaglia, and to AL Creative Director Betsy Folwell. You may recall that last year we took <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2011\/09\/20\/congratulations-to-adirondack-life\/\">note<\/a> when the magazine was named &#8220;Magazine of the Year&#8221; by IRMA.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the press release, with details about the gold, silver and bronze awards garnered by <em>Adirondack Life<\/em> this year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adirondack Life Magazine Wins International Regional Magazine Association Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>JAY, NY\u2014<em>Adirondack Life<\/em> won a total of 13 awards\u2014four gold, four silver and five bronze\u2014at the International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) conference, presented in Scottsdale, Arizona, on October 1. The awards honored work from 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Thill took gold in the Public Issues category for \u201cRisky Business\u201d (May\/June), about allegations of unsafe practices at an Adirondack white-water rafting company. Judges called it \u201ca true investigation. Thoroughly reported, clearly written.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The magazine\u2019s special section on Tropical Storm Irene, \u201cAfter the Storm\u201d (November\/December), written by Brian Mann, received gold in the General Feature category. Judges called it \u201ca tremendous effort\u201d with \u201ca gripping combination of reportage and first person reports.\u201d Mann\u2019s article on the problem of white-nose syndrome in Adirondack bats, \u201cNatural Disaster\u201d (March\/April), won bronze in the Nature Feature category.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Shaw\u2019s meditation on Follensby Pond, \u201cBack to the Source\u201d (July\/August), won gold in the Essay category. Judges cited his \u201cstrong use of language and imagery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final gold was for Nancie Battaglia\u2019s photograph of a pet blessing from \u201cAll God\u2019s Creatures\u201d (September\/October), which won in the Single Photograph category. Judges called it \u201ca marvelously complex, layered composition and an authentic moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rob Dunlavey received silver for his \u201crichly detailed\u201d and \u201cwhimsical\u201d illustrations in \u201cLive Here, Work Here\u201d (November\/December).<\/p>\n<p>Judges also gave silver to members of the <em>Adirondack Life<\/em> editorial staff. Senior Editor Niki Kourofsky won in the History Feature category for her colorful look into Lyon Mountain\u2019s rough-and-tumble mining past, \u201cFrontier Town\u201d (January\/February). Creative Director Elizabeth Folwell\u2019s article on canning, \u201cSelf Preservation\u201d (<em>At Home in the Adirondacks<\/em>), designed by Art Director Kelly Hofschneider, won in the combined writing\/art Food Feature category. The same feature earned Hofscheider the bronze in Art Direction of a Single Story.<\/p>\n<p>Editor Annie Stoltie\u2019s \u201ctender, well-structured story\u201d about Old Mountain Phelps and his descendents, \u201cAn Adirondack Icon Revealed\u201d (November\/December), won silver in the Profile category. Stoltie also took bronze in the Column category for her Short Carries essays \u201cPlaces in the Heart\u201d (January\/February), \u201cWordswoman\u201d (July\/August) and \u201cSlow Burn\u201d (November\/December).<\/p>\n<p>Senior Editor Lisa Bramen received Bronze in the Reader Service category for \u201cLive Here, Work Here\u201d (November\/December), which judges said \u201ctook a potentially dull subject and made it anything but.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The magazine was also given bronze honors in Overall Art Direction in the 40,000 and under circulation class for Hofschneider\u2019s \u201cstrong, lively layouts\u201d with \u201celegant typography\u201d; an award of merit in the Special Focus category for its <em>At Home in the Adirondacks<\/em> issue; and was the runner-up in its circulation class for Magazine of the Year. One judge wrote, \u201cFrom useful service that is laser-focused on its demographic, to compelling photography, <em>Adirondack Life<\/em> feels indispensable if you\u2019re fortunate enough to live there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creative Director Elizabeth Folwell said, \u201cWhat we do at <em>Adirondack Life<\/em> is reflect the issues, history and beauty of a very specific place, and we try to accomplish this in ways that people who have never experienced the Adirondacks can understand. That judges from all over the U.S. and Canada recognize excellence in our publication means we&#8217;re communicating our commitment to the park loudly and clearly, with grace, humor and insight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Adirondack Life<\/em> publishes eight issues a year. It covers historical, political, social, recreational and environmental issues relevant to the six-million-acre Adirondack Park and is known for some of the best photography in and out of New York State\u2019s wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>IRMA has 39 member magazines from Florida to Missouri to British Columbia. It was established in the 1960s to help regional magazine publishers, editors and art and circulation directors share ideas.
