We may think of this mid-Civil War landmark as a response to the practices of the Southern states, but all Americans were part of the history of slavery&#8230;and we still are. Locally, we know many homes served as stops along the <a href=\"http:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.com\/education\/multimedia\/interactive\/the-underground-railroad\/?ar_a=1\">Underground Railroad<\/a> and, perhaps most notably, the anti-slavery activist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Brown_%28abolitionist%29\">John Brown<\/a> had a farm in the Adirondacks.<\/p>\n<p>To mark this 150th anniversary, John Brown Lives!, North Country Community College and the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation are collaborating on a full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=417499458316197&amp;set=a.340103749389102.80603.123500951049384&amp;type=1&amp;theater\">schedule of events<\/a> this Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1.<\/p>\n<p>On <em>The Blue Note<\/em> today, from 3-5 pm, I&#8217;ll be playing some music celebrating civil rights and freedom&#8230;and reminding you about the extraordinary range of activities being planned for this weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This January marks the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
