{"id":3200,"date":"2013-02-22T17:00:38","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T22:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/?p=3200"},"modified":"2013-02-22T10:28:58","modified_gmt":"2013-02-22T15:28:58","slug":"dog-sled-events-in-newboro-ontario-this-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/allin\/2013\/02\/22\/dog-sled-events-in-newboro-ontario-this-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog sled events in Newboro, Ontario this Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">According to <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/02\/06\/sports\/warm-weather-forces-changes-ahead-of-iditarod-race.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=2&amp;hp\">news accounts<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, uneven snow has made\u00a0preparation\u00a0problematic for dog sled races in Alaska this year, including the famous <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/iditarod.com\/\">Iditerod<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, scheduled to start this March 2nd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A bit closer to home, the small Ontario town of Newboro also hosts dog-powered events:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twprideaulakes.on.ca\/dogsledraces\/index.html\">Rideau Lakes Cup Dog Sled Races<\/a> take place in the Village of Newboro, in the Township of Rideau Lakes. The main race is a mid-distance, 25 mile race, run with 6 dogs. There are also skijoring races (a skier pulled by one or two dogs)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twprideaulakes.on.ca\/dogsledraces\/trail.html\">Where is Newboro<\/a>, you ask? It&#8217;s sort of half-way between Kingston and Smiths Falls, in some lovely lake country.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">This event has also been hit and miss too in recent years, thanks to variable snow conditions. But anyone who&#8217;s walked an energetic dog knows there&#8217;s plenty of untapped power in a pooch. This is especially true in winter when an eager canine makes any leash-holder acutely aware of glide potential underfoot. (Yes, a well-trained dog will not tug you off your feet. If you have one of those I salute you.)<\/p>\n<p>I keep meaning to attend this event. I&#8217;m especially curious to see the skijoring: 1-2 dogs pulling a skier.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skidogs.ca\/?n=GeneralInfo.GettingStartedSkijoring\">tutorial from SkiDogs.ca<\/a>\u00a0and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hIkd6MZy47k\">video<\/a> of skijoring in action. Looking up skijoring I learned the word <em>skikj\u00f8ring <\/em>is\u00a0Norwegian and means ski driving. It&#8217;s sometimes done with horses too, as seen in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=08Z3OZ360rw\">video from New Hampshire<\/a>. (Jeepers!)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Alas, as it happens, I am not free to attend this Saturday.
