Most likely in your soggy town and in many places across Canada &#8211; this included recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_Alberta_floods\">severe flooding in Alberta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This past Monday it was residents of Toronto who were left asking &#8220;What the heck?!?!&#8221; as the skies poured out a record-setting deluge. Everyone knew there might be a thunderstorm that afternoon, but <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/704499\/environment-canada-answers-the-question-where-was-torontos-severe-thunderstorm-warning\/\">the severity of that storm was quite unexpected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/704213\/extra-electronics-need-to-be-turned-off-to-help-strained-power-grid-mayor-ford\/\">Global News Toronto<\/a> reports these sobering numbers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the peak of Monday\u2019s unprecedented rainfall, 110 mm of rain fell per hour. Approximately 126 mm of rain fell at Toronto&#8217;s Pearson Airport in total, breaking the previous record of 121 mm that was set during Hurricane Hazel in 1954.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>110mm of rain is equal to 4.3 inches. <em>Per hour.<\/em> Pearson Airport&#8217;s grand total of rain for that afternoon storm was 126 mm, \u00a0just under 5 inches (4.96 inches), an amount that reportedly exceeds Toronto&#8217;s average amount of rain for the entire month of July.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s\u00a0video from CBC of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/story\/2013\/07\/09\/toronto-rain-flooding-power-ttc.html\">Toronto manhole covers blasting up<\/a> as streets flood .\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/07\/09\/world\/americas\/toronto-train-flooding\">Go Transit trains were stranded<\/a>. The aforementioned article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/704213\/extra-electronics-need-to-be-turned-off-to-help-strained-power-grid-mayor-ford\/\">\u00a0from Global News<\/a> includes a grey-scape of time-lapse still shot of the front\u00a0engulfing\u00a0the city with rain.<\/p>\n<p>New England Cable news reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.necn.com\/07\/08\/13\/Rain-weather-problems-plaguing-Vt\/landing_weather.html?blockID=845949\">parts of Vermont just saw something similar<\/a>: 4.5 inches of rain in just 90 minutes. Much of Northern Vermont and the\u00a0Adirondacks\u00a0are under flash flood warnings for Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Language bonus: here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/idioms\/rain.php\">how to say &#8220;it&#8217;s raining cats and dogs&#8221; in other languages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently some Slovaks say &#8220;<em>Padaj\u00fa traktory<\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;it&#8217;s raining tractors&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Swedes might say &#8216;It&#8217;s raining ladies&#8221; but Spanish have a saying &#8220;it&#8217;s raining husbands.&#8221; Go figure.<\/p>\n<p>Afrikaaners might say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Ou vrouens met knopkieries reen<\/em><br \/>\nit&#8217;s raining old women with knobkerries (clubs)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What&#8217;s coming down at your house?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good gosh, it&#8217;s been wet.
