Every weekend in September, it seems I’m out in the garden digging potatoes, or sorting onions, or pulling corn stalks or–most likely–harvesting, handling and preserving tomatoes.

This past weekend was no different.

I’d already harvested many tomatoes–stored in buckets on my porch to ripen and find their way into canning pots or onto roasting trays. I gave loads to friends and neighbors. This weekend, I did another round of tomato duty, plus some crab apple mint jelly and end of the garden soup.

Bottom line: I can’t throw away a beautiful tomato. Too much of a miracle…in the north country.

Here, some photos of my weekend. No hikes in the woods, no paddle along a quiet river, no visit to a museum. My weekend=tomatoes.

Here’s a link to an urban version of tomato canning, from the NY Times.

Tomatoes halfway through roasting process.

Tomatoes cooking down for paste, on summer kitchen stove.

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6491" loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-6491" alt="End product.
