One of those names that immediately evokes a whole pallet of images and feelings. None of them very pretty, in spite of the pretty name. These photos arrived in an email a few weeks ago. I thought today was the right day to share them with you.<\/p>\n<p>According to the person who forwarded these photos, they were taken by a sailor on the USS Quapaw ATF-110, using a Brownie camera that was stored in a foot locker and discovered recently. [This story appears to be an internet myth, but the photos&#8211;no matter what camera used, no matter who took them&#8211;are still extraordinary.]<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;ve forgotten, this is Japanese launched\u00a0 a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces\u00a0 stationed at Pearl  Harbor , Hawaii By planning\u00a0 this attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander\u00a0  Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet\u00a0 in port. As luck would have it,  the Aircraft\u00a0 Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in\u00a0 port. (The USS  Enterprise was returning from\u00a0 Wake Island , where it had just delivered some\u00a0  aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying\u00a0 aircraft to Midway, and the USS  Saratoga and USS\u00a0Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United\u00a0 States .)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In\u00a0 spite of the latest intelligence  reports about\u00a0 the missing aircraft carriers (his most\u00a0 important targets),  Admiral Nagumo decided to\u00a0continue the attack with his force of six\u00a0carriers and  423 aircraft. At a range of 230\u00a0 miles north of Oahu , he launched the first  wave\u00a0of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours\u00a0 his first wave consisted of  183 fighters and\u00a0 torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in\u00a0 Pearl Harbor and  the airfields in Hickam,\u00a0 Kaneohe and Ewa.
