Canada sends jets to support intervention in Libya

The CBC and BBC report Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced Canada will help enforce a no-fly zone in Libya.Three CF-18 fighter jets have already left CFB Bagotville in Quebec, three more are slated to join them shortly.

Canada is among a number of nations that have imposed sanctions against the current regime, and called for Moammar Gadhafi to step down. Harper stated his reasoning as follows:

One either believes in freedom or one just says one believes in freedom. The Libyan people have shown by their sacrifice that they believe in it. Assisting them is a moral obligation upon those of us who profess to believe in this great ideal.

As head of a minority government, Harper sought and received support for this action from leadership of the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois. Harper indicated he will bring the matter before Parliament as well, when it resumes next week.

Are we more willing to intervene when there’s oil involved? Is this about democracy, or about our indulgent lifestyle?

  2. Mervel says:

How is Libya different from Iraq under Saddam? You could make the case that Saddam was more brutal than Gaddafi. So how is this different, both were genocidal towards there own people, entering Libya would seem to justify our invasion of Iraq.

  3. Mervel says:

It does not justify it however, it simply shows that Obama was smarter than Bush in that he is letting the French and English lead the military action and using the UN as it should be used. Hopefully very few US and Canadian troops will be involved.

We’ve sold Egypt and Saudi Arabia state of the art fighter aircraft for years. Let them take care of the “no fly” zone.

  5. Brian says:

Intervention is a nice euphemism. Let’s call it was it is: an attack.

  6. Pete Klein says:

I don’t care who does it but I do hope someone takes out Gadhafi forever.
And three cheers for the Canadians. If memory serves me correctly, before the US entered both WWI and WWII, some Americans went north to fight with the Canadians.

  7. Mervel says:

But PNE as the parents we have to be in charge of our children.
