{"id":10010,"date":"2013-07-25T15:39:06","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T19:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=10010"},"modified":"2013-07-26T09:36:36","modified_gmt":"2013-07-26T13:36:36","slug":"senator-little-on-the-lake-placid-er-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2013\/07\/25\/senator-little-on-the-lake-placid-er-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Update: Lake Placid ER decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\">There&#8217;s still no word this morning on a final decision involving Lake Placid&#8217;s emergency room.\u00a0 The board of directors of Adirondack Health met last night to discuss the future of the ER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Adirondack Daily Enterprise reporter Chris Knight tells North Country Public Radio that the organization has declined to say if any vote had been taken or what the outcome was.<\/p>\n<p>The issue has grown into a major controversy in Lake Placid, with many community leaders campaigning to keep the 24\/7 emergency room open.<\/p>\n<p>Adirondack Health has argued that the ER sees little traffic, especially late at night &#8212; and cost the non-profit hospital half a million dollars in red ink last year.<\/p>\n<p>An effort to push through legislation in Albany that would allow the facility to operate as a part-time ER failed win approval.<\/p>\n<p>Adirondack Health has proposed operating the facility as an &#8220;urgent care&#8221; clinic.\u00a0 NCPR will update this story as more information becomes available.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday morning, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/22423\/20130725\/adirondack-health-to-decide-fate-of-lake-placid-er-tonight\">NCPR reported<\/a> that a final decision is expected tonight on the future of Lake Placid&#8217;s emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>Adirondack Health has proposed reducing the facility to a part-time &#8220;urgent care clinic.&#8221;\u00a0 That idea has sparked significant opposition in Lake Placid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Sen.-Betty-Little-speaking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10013\" alt=\"Sen Betty Little\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Sen.-Betty-Little-speaking-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Sen.-Betty-Little-speaking-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Sen.-Betty-Little-speaking-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Sen.-Betty-Little-speaking-450x299.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Sen.-Betty-Little-speaking.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In that brief story, which I wrote, we included the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Community leaders, including state Senator Betty Little, have criticized the plan to cut back operations at the small hospital in Lake Placid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A number of listeners and community leaders have contacted us to inquire about the source of our information about Sen. Little&#8217;s perspective on Adirondack Health&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>The following comment was made to NCPR last month by Sen. Little in an interview, at a time when she was working to secure special legislative approval for the Lake Placid ER to operate part-time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8220;We have so much activity in Lake Placid.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t be an Olympic center and not have emergency services here. And to help our rescue squad when they&#8217;re coming from Wilmington, you know to Lake Placid you could say, &#8216;Well, what&#8217;s another 11 miles?&#8217;\u00a0 Well during the day, that other 11 miles is pretty slow.&#8221;<\/strong> <\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the interview, Sen.
