(PHOTO: AMC)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Adirondack Health announced a few minutes ago that it will begin to &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\">transition to a part-time ER in Lake Placid.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>During the legislative session earlier this summer, the Saranac Lake-based hospital sought permission from lawmakers in Albany to operate the ER on a part-time basis, but that legislation failed.<\/p>\n<p>State regulations prevent the operation of emergency rooms in New York state on a part-time basis, without special approval.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to clarify what this decision means for Adirondack Health, spokesman Joe Riccio responded with the foll0wing statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Cambria;\">Though the effort to gain approval in the last legislative session was unsuccessful, it did open the door for a productive dialogue with the state Department of Health to pursue the part-time ER option.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Riccio says the hospital will wait for approval from Albany before making substantive changes at the Lake Placid facility.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate goal he said is to &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\">ensure all quality, patient safety and regulatory requirements are held to the high standard set by Adirondack Health and its staff.\u00a0 If approved, the part-time ER will operate a minimum of 12 hours per day.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0The hospital has announced that an &#8220;ad hoc transition team&#8221; is being formed that will include community members to shape the changes.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\nAdirondack Health has argued that the full-time ER was often operating without patient traffic, costing the non-profit half a million dollars a year in losses.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some critics in the community, however, have argued that loss of a full-time emergency room would pose serious risks in an area that attracts large numbers of athletes and sports enthusiasts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chris Knight, from the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, will have more on this story Monday morning during the 8 O&#8217;clock Hour.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adirondack Health announced a few minutes ago that it will begin to &#8220;transition to a [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10037"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=10037"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10037\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":10039,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10037\/revisions\/10039"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=10037"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=10037"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=10037"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
