Yikes. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/parallels\/2013\/10\/09\/230667253\/a-recurring-tragedy-death-in-a-bangladesh-garment-factory\">recurring tragedy<\/a>\u00a0indeed.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama has indicated that he will nominate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2013\/10\/08\/230567774\/obama-will-tap-janet-yellen-as-chair-of-the-fed\">Janet Yellen<\/a> to chair of the Federal Reserve, when Ben Bernanke completes his term in January.<\/p>\n<p>And the FDA &#8211; which is partially affected by the shutdown, but mostly still up and running &#8211; is considering whether to allow a highly controversial study, in which scientists would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/health\/2013\/10\/09\/229167219\/proposed-treatment-to-fix-genetic-diseases-raising-ethics-issues\">change the genetic material in a woman&#8217;s egg<\/a>. The idea is to prevent babies from getting genetic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Probably less contentious is the opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/press\/10092013-licensed-farm-breweries\">14 new microbreweries<\/a> across New York state. Today Governor Cuomo welcomed the new businesses, which have opened with &#8220;Farm Brewery&#8221; licenses.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Environmental Advocates of New York released its annual <a href=\"http:\/\/eplvotersguide.org\/?page_id=8\">Environmental Scorecard<\/a> for legislators in our state. Jeff Klein, down in the Bronx, won the 2013 Oil Slick award. In the North Country, legislators scored as follows.
