House Speaker John Boehner says he&#8217;s willing to pass a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2013\/10\/10\/231446056\/boehner-proposes-deal-on-debt-ceiling-more-talk-on-shutdown\">temporary extension of the debt ceiling<\/a>. But that won&#8217;t affect the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been sentenced to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2013\/10\/10\/231510547\/former-detroit-mayor-kilpatrick-sentenced-to-28-years\">28 years in prison on corruption charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario writer<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/bookclub\/2013\/07\/06\/alice-munro-retiring-from-writing-again\/\"> Alice Munro <\/a>has won the Nobel Prize in literature. She&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2013\/10\/10\/231341147\/book-news-alice-munro-wins-nobel-prize-in-literature\">13th woman and the first Canadian<\/a> to win the prize.<\/p>\n<p>In Empire State news:<\/p>\n<p>Last week New York&#8217;s Attorney General has subpoenaed personal information on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/business\/2013\/10\/airbnb-ny\/\">New Yorkers who use Airbnb<\/a>, the online housing marketplace. Airbnb \u00a0has filed a motion in New York State Supreme Court, saying the request was too broad, and that they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/airbnb-refuses-to-give-user-data-to-attorney-general-2013-10\">won&#8217;t hand over the information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Six leading global technology companies will invest $1.5 billion to create \u2018Nano Utica,\u2019 a nanotechnology research hub in Utica, modeled after a similar effort in Albany. Governor Cuomo&#8217;s office says the project could create 1000-plus jobs.<\/p>\n<p>And news in our northern corner of the world:<\/p>\n<p>The Plattsburgh Press-Republican reports that new buses and trolleys are coming to Essex County &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrepublican.com\/0100_news\/x1612861833\/New-Essex-County-trolleys-buses-coming\">most of them to Lake Placid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Police will have a major presence at the <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/police-plan-big-presence-for-phish-show-in-glens-falls\/article_d8bb0414-3129-11e3-968d-001a4bcf887a.html\">upcoming Phish show<\/a>\u00a0at Glens Falls Civic Center, according to the Glens Falls Post Star. &#8220;I think there will be a better handle on it this time,&#8221; Civic Center general manager Jeremy Huelsing told the paper, referring to the band&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MtowGfet6vk\">legendary Glens Falls Halloween concert in 1994<\/a>.
