Demonstrations against shale gas development by SWN Resources have taken a violent turn in Rexton, New Brunswick today.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CBC news is reporting an on-going protest against shale gas development in New Brunswick, Canada <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/shale-gas-protesters-clash-with-police-in-rexton-n-b-1.2100703\">escalated dramatically today<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shale gas protesters\u00a0and RCMP trying to enforce an injunction are clashing in\u00a0Rexton, N.B., leading to at least five police vehicles being set on fire and the arrest of a First Nations chief<cite>.<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca\/nb\/news-nouvelles\/releases-communiques\/13-10-17-135208-eng.htm\">a news release<\/a>, the RCMP said more than 40 protesters have been arrested for various offences including firearms offences, uttering threats, intimidation, mischief\u00a0and for refusing to abide by a court injunction<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The same CBC report quotes Chief Gabrial Atwin, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100017085\/1100100017086\">Kingsclear First Nation<\/a> as saying:<cite> <\/cite>&#8220;We urge all sides not to resort to violence as history has proven these tactics are not productive.<cite>&#8220;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalpost.com\/2013\/10\/17\/new-brunswick-shale-gas-protesters-pepper-sprayed-police-cars-reportedly-set-on-fire\/\">The National Post<\/a> contacted Elsipogtog First Nation councillor,\u00a0 Robert Levi, who said he went to the site in Rexton, N.B. after hearing the RCMP was enforcing the injunction against the protestors&#8217; blockade.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The injunction was granted earlier this month to end the blockade of a compound where energy company SWN Resources stores exploration equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Levi said he planned to stay at the site to try to block the movement of the company\u2019s equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to stay \u2014 I mean, we have to,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is what our people have been fighting for.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/rcmp-move-in-on-first-nation-protesting-shale-gas-development\/article14904344\/\">The Globe and Mail<\/a> spoke with participants who describe the situation as very tense. According to Susan Levi-Peters, a former chief of the Elsipogtog First Nation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is really very volatile.
