(Photo: Susan Waters)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For years, tourism experts in the North Country have complained about the lack of modern, up-to-standard hotel rooms, in a region that increasingly relies on visitors to drive local economies.<\/p>\n<p>The age of the roadside motel ended a couple of decades ago (at least) but there was little interest and little investment in upgrading to a new generation of resort or hotel.<\/p>\n<p>That bottleneck seems to have ended.\u00a0 Lake George is wrestling with proposals <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/proposal-for-second-tall-hotel-meets-with-opposition-in-lake\/article_d2a792fa-2c55-11e3-836a-0019bb2963f4.html\">for not one but two major new hotels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Saranac Lake, developers are moving forward with plans to redevelop the historic Hotel Saranac, while also building a new <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/proposal-for-second-tall-hotel-meets-with-opposition-in-lake\/article_d2a792fa-2c55-11e3-836a-0019bb2963f4.html\">waterfront resort on the shore of Lake Flower<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A new hotel is also in development <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/23143\/20131101\/new-hotel-anchors-clayton-waterfront-re-do\">in Clayton on the bank of the St. Lawrence River<\/a>, designed to offer more rooms in the 1000 Islands region.<\/p>\n<p>Also waiting in the wings is the Adirondack Club and Resort in Tupper Lake, where developers say they hope to eventually open a hotel as part of the real estate and ski hill project.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/19958\/20120611\/adirondack-club-and-resort-lawsuit-moves-forward\">That project is tied up in the courts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of these projects are receiving funds and support from the <a href=\"http:\/\/regionalcouncils.ny.gov\/north-country\/062713\/ecodev-celebrate-groundbreaking-1000-islands-harbor-hotel\">North Country Regional Economic Development Council<\/a>, but I&#8217;m guessing the hotel boom has more to do with the reviving economy and years of pent-up demand.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think?\u00a0 Is this surge in hotel construction long overdue?\u00a0 Do you worry that new, big hotels could transform the feel of communities?\u00a0 Do you welcome the construction jobs and the new employment these resorts will bring?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years, tourism experts in the North Country have complained about the lack of modern, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12583"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=12583"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12583\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":12585,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12583\/revisions\/12585"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=12583"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=12583"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=12583"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
