Chris Christie re-elected in a landslide in New Jersey.\u00a0 The first step in a 2016 campaign?\u00a0 It&#8217;ll be interesting if Christie, as a moderate, wins big in a blue state while tea party activist-conservative Republican Ken Cuccinelli stumbles in purple Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 8pm.\u00a0 Ballot Booth Weariness.\u00a0 With an hour to go, is it heresy to suggest that maybe a 6 am to 9 pm window for polling is excessive?\u00a0 Virginia wraps up at 7 pm, New Jersey at 8 pm.\u00a0 Do NY voters need 15 hours to get the job done, especially now that we have easier absentee and mail-in voting?<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 7:40pm.\u00a0 NY Times reporting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/06\/nyregion\/voters-consider-de-blasio-and-lhota-along-with-bloombergs-legacy.html?hp\">&#8220;light turnout&#8221; in NYC<\/a>, in part because of the lopsided mayoral race.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/innovationtrail.org\/\">Innovation Trail<\/a> reporter Jenna Flanagan in Schenectady says there has been a &#8220;light stream of dedicated voters&#8221; in Central NY.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: 7:25 pm: Polls are closed in Virginia.\u00a0 We&#8217;re still 90 minutes out from the end of voting in NY, but Virginia&#8217;s election is already being tallied and New Jersey closes in 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 7:20pm:\u00a0 Incumbent-challenger dynamics in SLC contests.<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">A factor in both the DA\u2019s race and the race for Canton\u2019s village mayor in St. Lawrence County is the difference in campaigning style between the incumbents and the challengers. Sitting DA Nicole Duv\u00e9 has largely continued working, focused on her work ethic under financially trying circumstances. She\u2019s held one press conference, few public appearances, and has only occasionally responded to Rain\u2019s attacks.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Similarly, Canton mayor Dave Curry seems to have barely campaigned at all. \u201cPeople know me, they know where to find me,\u201d Curry told me at the bar he owns, Dave\u2019s II, on Main Street.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Meanwhile, DA challenger Mary Rain and Canton village mayoral challenger, Mary Ann Ashley, have campaigned hard, with lots of door-to-door effort. It\u2019ll be interesting to see if that wearing-out-the-leather-on-your-shoes approach pays off.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>UPDATE 7:10pm:\u00a0 St. Lawrence County DA Race<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">The big question in the DA race between incumbent Democrat Nicole Duv\u00e9 and Republican Mary Rain is to what extent voters will blame Duv\u00e9 for two high-profile murders that have gone without convictions, in particular, the murder of 12 year-old Garrett Phillips in Potsdam in 2011. There are lawn signs all over the Potsdam area that read \u201cJustice For Garrett\u201d with a picture of the boy. One huge sign as you\u2019re entering Potsdam reads in big black letters, \u201cUnsolved Murder\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Tandy Cyrus, the boy\u2019s mother, has joined Mary Rain on the campaign trail, and Rain has capitalized on her presence to attack Duv\u00e9 viciously for not prosecuting the case. (It\u2019s widely believed police may have a suspect in mind, but don\u2019t have enough evidence to go to court.)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Potsdam is Duv\u00e9\u2019s hometown. If sympathy for the slain boy\u2019s mother and frustration with the lack of prosecution peels away support from Duv\u00e9\u2019s geographical strength, Rain may pull off a victory.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 7pm.\u00a0 Election night factoid:\u00a0 According to the NYS board of elections there are 11,016,685 &#8220;active registered&#8221; voters in New York.\u00a0 Follow the latest updates on voting on the ballot props at <a href=\"http:\/\/nyenr.elections.state.ny.us\/\">the BOE&#8217;s website here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 6:50.\u00a0 Eager voter!\u00a0 A woman crashed her car into the fire hall in Theresa today, in Jefferson County, as folks were voting inside.\u00a0 No injuries reported and the vote continues there using a different door&#8230;according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20131105\/NEWS09\/711059694\">Watertown Daily Times<\/a>, the driver was on her way to vote when the mishap occurred.\u00a0 She apparently suffered minor back pain.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 6:40 pm:\u00a0 Other politics:\u00a0 Gay marriage advances again, this time in Illinois. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/06\/us\/illinois-sends-bill-allowing-gay-marriage-to-governor.html?_r=0\">Read about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PDATE:\u00a0 6:30pm:\u00a0 A big test today for two new Adirondack green groups.\u00a0 This election season has seen a fascinating effort by newer, smaller Adirondack environmental groups to redefine the debate over the NYCO minerals land swap proposal in the Adirondacks.\u00a0\u00a0 This had looked like a shoo-in.\u00a0 But activists like Dan Plumley at Adirondack Wild and Peter Bauer at Protect the Adirondacks have waged a smart, low-budget campaign using social media and free news and blog media coverage to spread their opposition message.\u00a0 Will that be enough to offset NYCO&#8217;s media ad budget, along with the support for the swap from bigger groups like the Adirondack Council and the Adirondack Mountain Club?\u00a0 We&#8217;ll see in a few hours.\u00a0 But if they pull it off, this will be a big statewide victory for Protect and Adk Wild.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 5:50pm:\u00a0 NATIONAL PICTURE.\u00a0 A lot of big races on the ballot today, from governor&#8217;s races in New Jersey and Virginia to big mayoral races around the US.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/itsallpolitics\/2013\/11\/05\/243178174\/9-elections-to-watch\">NPR has a great primer on the contests worth watchin<\/a>g.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 5:30pm:\u00a0 The other controversial DA&#8217;s race in the North Country?\u00a0 David Sommerstein had a fascinating look this week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/23155\/20131104\/accusations-but-little-information-in-st-lawrence-da-race\">at the St. Lawrence County DA&#8217;s race<\/a>.\u00a0 An equally heated fight has developed in Washington County&#8217;s prosecutor race.\u00a0 Incumbent Republican Kevin Kortright is facing Republican challenger Assemblyman Tony Jordan.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a bitter contest and the Glens Falls Post Star endorsed the challenger.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fortedward.wnyt.com\/news\/news\/545182-da-race-among-most-contentious-region\"> Read details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 5:10 pm:\u00a0 The long arm of Mayor Rabideau?\u00a0 Voters in Plattsburgh choose a new mayor today.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/539794\/Rabideau-helps-Plattsburgh-mayoral-candidate.html?nav=5008\">Chris Knight at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a> reported this week that Saranac Lake and former Plattsburgh Mayor Clyde Rabideau has been supporting independent candidate Chris Rosenquest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I did give him some advice on how to write news releases, basic news release 101, and just general advice about how to go door to door,&#8221; Rabideau said. &#8220;Just basic stuff, as a friend.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rosenquest faces Republican James Calnon and Democrat Mark Tiffer in today&#8217;s vote.\u00a0 Remember, polls close at 9pm.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 4:40 pm.\u00a0 Women mayors advance in Upstate NY.\u00a0 So New York City won&#8217;t have a woman as mayor,\u00a0 after Christine Quinn flamed out in hte Democratic primary.\u00a0 But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/politics\/2013\/11\/8535576\/upstates-year-female-mayor?top-featured-1\">Capital New York<\/a> notes that women are on track to lead three of upstate New York&#8217;s biggest cities, Albany, Rochester and Syracuse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>If successful, Lovely Warren in Rochester and Kathy Sheehan in Albany will be the first women to lead their respective cities. Stephanie Miner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/politics\/2013\/11\/8535576\/Three%20of%20the%20state%27s%20largest,%20most%20influential%20cities%20will%20likely%20be%20led%20by%20women%20following%20Tuesday%27s%20elections.\">was elected the first female mayor of Syracuse in 2009<\/a> and is hoping for another term.
