That&#8217;s because on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/23056\/20131022\/as-nov-1-approaches-social-service-providers-brace-for-impact\">November 1st<\/a>, a boost to the food stamp program from the 2009 federal stimulus expired. Cuomo issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/press\/11082013-local-food-banks\">press release<\/a> on Friday &#8211; one day after\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/08\/us\/cut-in-food-stamps-forces-hard-choices-on-poor.html?hp&amp;_r=0\"><em>The\u00a0New York Times<\/em> <\/a>published a piece on how SNAP recipients are dealing with nationwide cutbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Fire crews <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcax.com\/story\/23912205\/fire-leads-to-meth-lab-discovery-in-saranac\">discovered a meth lab<\/a> while battling a blaze a call in Saranac.<\/p>\n<p>National Grid has finished cleaning up the site of a former gas plant in Ogdensburg. The city is pleased.<\/p>\n<p>In Watertown, the City School District is having difficulty making ends meet. And Common Core isn&#8217;t helping, writes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20131108\/NEWS03\/711089887\"><em>Watertown Daily Times<\/em><\/a>. The school district is finding the new educational standards to be not only intellectually challenging for students (and sometimes<a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/2013\/10\/21\/parents-complain-common-core-curriculum-assignments-are-too-challenging\/\"> for the grownups, too<\/a>), but also financially demanding.
